Anthropic pauses free Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits

Just days in, Anthropic has halted two perks in its startup program: a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits. The reason is that far more applications came in than expected.

Anthropic, the company behind the AI assistant Claude, paused two parts of its Claude for Startups program on October 9, 2026. They are a free one-year subscription to Claude Team and a one-time bonus of $1,000 in API credits. The API is the access developers use to build Claude into their own applications.
The program was launched or expanded on October 6. Just three days later, Anthropic hit the brakes.
More applicants than expected
In a post on X, the Claude account wrote that the company "underestimated demand" and therefore had to pause the offers. According to Anthropic's Sarah Wolf, the program received 21 times as many applications in the first 48 hours as it had in the previous five months. Anthropic has since said that hundreds of thousands of people have applied.
The company also says the eligibility criteria were not set up correctly at the start, so many applicants who are not actual startups got through. Anthropic is now reviewing the applications again so that the program goes only to genuine startups.
What changes for users
Those who have already activated the offers keep them on their accounts. Anthropic is writing to approved applicants who have not yet activated their benefits, and their applications will be checked again.
The rest of the program continues. That includes discounts from partners, advisory hours with Anthropic's applied AI team and the monthly API credits for those on a Claude Max or Team plan.
Forbes reports that the decision has drawn criticism online because the offer was withdrawn so quickly.
What does it mean for you?
If you run a small business and were counting on free access to Claude, you will need to wait for word from Anthropic. If you have already activated the offer, you are not affected. The episode also shows how high the demand for AI tools is right now, and that free offers can disappear on short notice.
