Limelit Open: Free tool shows whether AI mentions your brand
AI-generated and checked against the sources listed below.
Limelit has released Limelit Open, an open source tool that measures how often AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude mention a brand in their answers. The program runs on the user's own computer and is still in an early version.

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity questions instead of searching on Google. That raises a new question for companies: are we mentioned when an AI answers questions about our industry? Limelit Open can help answer that.
Limelit Open is a free tool whose code is open (open source) and released under the Apache-2.0 license. The tool keeps track of how the AI services mention and refer to your brand compared with competitors.
What can it measure?
The tool covers seven AI services: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overview, Google's AI Mode and Bing Copilot. Among other things, it measures how often your brand is mentioned, how much of the mentions you have relative to competitors, what position you get in the answer and how often you are linked to.
According to a review of the project, the tool finds mentions through plain text search. In other words, it is not an AI model judging what it thinks it has seen. That makes the numbers easier to verify.
The industry calls the discipline AEO or GEO. It means optimizing your content so that AI answer engines find and use it, just as people previously optimized for search engines.
Runs on your own machine
Limelit Open is packaged in a single program file. It creates a small database (SQLite) on its own the first time it starts and shows a dashboard at the computer's local address. Neither Docker nor a separate database server is required. Users use their own API keys for the AI services, and prompts, competitors and answers are stored in a file the user owns. Spending limits can also be set. The tool can also be connected to Claude via MCP, a standard that lets AI assistants use external tools.
Early version
The project is at version 0.1 and is being developed in the open. There is a live demo at demo.limelit.co, which tracks a GPU cloud provider against 21 competitors across six AI services.
What does it mean for you?
If you or your workplace has a website, it may become important to know whether AI mentions you. Commercial tools for this often cost money. Limelit Open is a free alternative, but it requires technical knowledge to set up, and you pay for the use of the AI services' APIs yourself.
What it means for you
If you or your workplace has a website or a brand, Limelit Open lets you check for free whether ChatGPT, Claude and the other AI services mention you when people ask about your industry. It is mostly for marketers and business owners, but you need a technical colleague or some technical knowledge to get it up and running. You pay for the use of the AI services' APIs yourself, so set a spending limit before you start. If you are curious but do not want to install anything, you can first look at the live demo at demo.limelit.co.
