What's new

At its DevDay conference in San Francisco on September 29, 2026, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Space, a new shared workspace in ChatGPT. Space replaces the former Library tab and gathers all documents, files, presentations and spreadsheets in one place, where both colleagues and AI can work together. At the same time, OpenAI launched Dots, persistent AI agents that, unlike regular chats, remember context over time and can keep working on tasks even after you have closed the conversation.

What's clever

The clever part is that you no longer have to copy text back and forth between ChatGPT and Word or Google Docs. In Space, you can create Pages, living documents with text, images, diagrams and charts that update automatically if they are connected to, for example, Slack, email or calendar. You can also create presentations just by talking to ChatGPT about what they should contain, and then export them to PowerPoint or Google Slides. That feature is rolling out "over the coming weeks," while shared spreadsheets are coming later. The Dots agents can keep track of several projects at once and access more than 4,000 different apps, so they can, for example, fetch data or send messages on their own via Slack or Microsoft Teams.

Cheaper or better?

OpenAI has not put a separate price on Space; the feature is included in the existing subscriptions for Pro, Business and Enterprise customers. Pro normally costs around $200 a month, while Business Premium is about $100-125 per user per month. The first Dot agent is free for Pro and Business Premium users, but prices for additional agents have not yet been announced. Regular free and Plus users (Plus costs $20 a month) do not get access to Space. It looks like a clear attempt to challenge Microsoft's Office suite and Google's Docs/Slides, but there are no independent tests yet of whether Space is actually better. Rival Meta has already passed 3.4 million downloads in under three weeks with its agent Muse, so the battle over digital AI employees is in full swing.

What it's good at

Space and Dots are made for office work where several people and AI agents need to collaborate on the same documents and projects over time. It is an obvious fit for companies that want AI to follow ongoing tasks, such as keeping a budget updated or following a customer case without starting over each time. The feature is still limited on mobile, where you can mainly read and share documents, while the actual editing takes place on desktop and web.
