Google has updated the Gemini app so users can generate, preview and edit files such as PDFs, presentations and spreadsheets directly in the chat. Some editing features only work on the web version, however.

Google announced on October 29, 2026, that users of the Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and more directly in the chat. That means you no longer have to download a file first to make changes to it.

The feature builds on something Google had already launched. On April 29, 2026, the ability to create files such as PDF, Word, Excel, Docs, Sheets and Slides straight from a Gemini chat arrived, according to 9to5Google. Now preview and editing are being added on top.

Three ways to edit

According to Google, there are three ways to edit a file:

- Expand the file to full screen and type the changes yourself. - Highlight text and ask questions about that specific passage. - Ask Gemini to improve the file.

As an example, Google mentions that handwritten lecture notes can be turned into a study guide as a PDF. The user can then edit it themselves or ask Gemini to adjust it by highlighting specific sections.

Web and mobile are not the same

Viewing and editing PDFs works on both web and mobile. Google Docs, Google Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT and code, on the other hand, can only be edited in the chat in the web version of Gemini.

Presentations can be changed in the chat and then opened in Google Slides or exported as PPTX or PDF, according to 9to5Google. Spreadsheets can be built as data models and trackers in Google Sheets.

Who gets it?

Google says the features are rolling out to all users in all the languages where the Gemini app is available.

At the same time, Gemini's overlay on Android is getting a new, partially transparent design with a blur effect, according to 9to5Google. The design debuted earlier on the Pixel 11.

It is not clear from the sources whether you can also edit files you upload yourself, or only files that Gemini has created. Google's text is about generating files, and Thurrott describes the feature as editing AI-generated files in the chat.
