ChatGPT gets a file library for old uploads

AI-generated and checked against the sources listed below.

OpenAI has launched Library in ChatGPT so paying users can find and reuse files they have previously uploaded without starting over.

What is new

OpenAI has added a file library, called Library, to ChatGPT. It rolled out on March 24, 2026, to Plus, Pro and Business subscribers. Previously, an uploaded file was tied to the individual conversation. If you deleted the conversation, or could not find it again, you had to upload the file again.

Now ChatGPT automatically saves documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDF files and images that you upload in chats. They are gathered in one place in the sidebar on chatgpt.com. Here you can search and filter, for example by whether the file was uploaded by you or created by ChatGPT. According to BleepingComputer, the library also collects uploads from the past two weeks.

Important for Danes: At launch, the feature was not available in the EEA (the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), Switzerland and the UK. So it is not available in Denmark in the initial rollout. Newer information suggests the feature has since been expanded to more subscriptions, but I have not been able to confirm whether it now works in the EU.

What is clever

You can bring an old file into a new conversation via the "Add from library" menu by the text field. That saves time if you regularly work with the same files, such as a budget, a contract or a presentation.

It is also worth knowing that a file does not disappear just because you delete the conversation. It stays in the library until you remove it yourself. OpenAI says deleted files are removed from its servers within 30 days. That is practical, but also something to keep in mind if the files contain sensitive information.

There are limits on the files: up to 512 MB per file, text documents up to 2 million tokens (pieces of text), spreadsheets up to about 50 MB and images up to 20 MB.

Cheaper or better?

The feature costs nothing extra. It comes with your existing subscription. According to the media, the storage space is about 20 GB for Plus and Business and 100 GB for Pro. Free users were left out of the initial rollout, but newer information also mentions Free (500 MB) and Go (4 GB). Subscription prices have not changed in connection with the news, and I have not found figures for what they cost in kroner.

Compared with before, it is clearly better, because files are no longer locked to a single conversation. Competitors have similar solutions, such as project folders with fixed files, but a direct comparison is not in the sources.

What it is good at

The feature suits those who use ChatGPT for recurring work: analyzing the same spreadsheets, reading through reports, working with templates or drafts that need to be reused over several days.

For companies on a Business subscription, it makes collaboration a little more consistent, because employees have a fixed overview of their own files. Remember to clean up sensitive documents, though, and check whether the feature is open for your account in Denmark before you count on it.
