Image APIs: No model is best at everything, say two providers
AI-generated from the sources listed, with automated source checks.
Two commercial comparisons of AI image services point in the same direction: the right choice depends on the task. The prices are estimates and cannot be compared directly.
If a company or app developer wants AI to generate images automatically, there are many services to choose from. This typically happens through an API, a technical entry point where a program can send a request and get an image back. Two recent guides compare the providers, and they reach the same conclusion: There is no single winner.
Different strengths
Apiframe reviews nine services. According to the guide, Midjourney is strong on stylistic, artistic quality, while OpenAI's GPT Image 2 stands out for following instructions. Google's Nano Banana 2 is praised for keeping the same character across multiple images, and Flux for speed and flexibility. Ideogram stands out for legible text in images, and Recraft for vector graphics. Leonardo AI is mentioned for game assets and concept art.
Atlas Cloud compares six other models. Flux 2 Pro stands out for skin texture and anatomy, GPT Image 1.5 for complex scenes, and Imagen 4 Ultra for text and speed. ByteDance's Seedream 5.0 stands out for integrated web search.
Price per image
The sources list prices in US dollars per image. Apiframe cites, for example, roughly USD 0.02-0.19 for GPT Image 2, USD 0.02-0.10 for Midjourney and USD 0.01-0.05 for Flux. Stable Diffusion is free if you host it yourself, and up to USD 0.05 from other providers. Freepik AI and Leonardo AI are subscription-based.
Atlas Cloud lists roughly USD 0.009-0.034 for GPT Image 1.5 and USD 0.03-0.06 for Flux 2 Pro.
The figures are not directly comparable, however. The sources use different model versions, and the price varies with resolution, quality and volume. OpenAI itself does not list a price per image, but a price per million tokens. Tokens are the small units that AI models work in. The standard price is USD 8 for image input, USD 30 for image output and USD 5 for text input per million tokens. Batch pricing, where tasks are grouped together, is 50 percent lower.
Consider the source
Both guides are written by companies with their own interests. Apiframe itself sells access to Midjourney, and Atlas Cloud sells bundled access to multiple models. The rankings and prices are therefore their own estimates.
Apiframe concludes that the right choice depends on what you are building, and that you have to weigh artistic quality, speed, price, accuracy and commercial licensing. Atlas Cloud argues that companies should route tasks to specialized models through a single API rather than pick just one.
